AI AGENT BASICS

Build your first AI agent workflow without the chaos

An AI agent becomes useful when it can move a defined job forward with tools and state. It becomes dangerous when the goal, permissions and stopping conditions are vague. Start with a narrow workflow whose actions you can observe and reverse.

Define one finish line

State the exact result the agent should produce and where it must appear. Avoid goals such as improve everything or keep working forever.

Add a maximum time, usage budget and attempt count.

Give each tool a boundary

List which tools are read-only and which can change external state. Require fresh confirmation for purchases, publication, credentials or irreversible actions.

Do not let one broad credential silently become permission for every connected system.

Persist the right state

Store operation identity, input version, previous result and next safe action. This prevents duplicate sends, charges and deployments after a timeout.

Keep secrets out of logs and handoffs.

Test failure before autonomy

Simulate provider errors, expired authentication, partial completion and a restart. Confirm that the agent stops, reports the exact state and does not repeat an uncertain action.

Only expand autonomy after the bounded flow is reliable.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What builders ask next

What is the difference between an AI assistant and an agent?

An assistant usually responds to a request. An agent can use tools and state to advance a bounded workflow across steps.

Does an agent need access to every business system?

No. Give it the minimum tools and permissions required for the specific workflow.

Can QERA design an agent workflow?

QERA can turn the desired outcome into a structured plan with tools, boundaries, approval points and acceptance checks.
